So what does everyone think of the ending? There are a lot of intense biblical symbols involved....like Jim Casy, Rose of Sharon and the dying man (which was kind of gross), and even the dead baby. I know this wasn't the whole point for these parts in the story, he really wanted to show the hardships that the migrants were facing and represent them in a powerful way, and I recognize that Moses was sent down the river in a basket, but what is the point for the baby? Salvation or a message I guess...?

i really liked the part about the baby. jon was kind of using it to make a statement, hoping that someone finds it and sees what is happening to people...i thought it was a really good way to let that baby's life (if you can call it that) have purpose.

i don't know though, i don't think that this whole thing was one biblical reference. not everything has to be...

I think there were a few biblical references in the book, but i'm pretty sure you can find biblical corrolations in any book or movie. The religous symbolism was important, but Steinbeck was not making that the purpose of the book, he was trying to show the hard lives of people at that time

Steinbeck probably wasn't even Christian, so I doubt he would write a book with that many biblical symbols.

yeah, that's where you start getting into the issue of author's intent. i learned this from my dad. a lot of english professors and literary critics don't think it matters whether or the author INTENDED for the symbolism to show up or not. as long as it makes sense to the reader, it's valid. others say only the ones the author intentionally put in count...i agree with the former, so there are as many biblical symbols in gow as we can find.
