Okay, so I thought Steinbeck had really good description and I really liked the story of the Joads. But as the book progressed, characters that weren't really developing just died or walked away. Then, the end gives no resolution to the 619 page book....
Do you think Steinbeck did it for some kind of effect or was he just lazy or had writer's block? Or some other reason?

I thought it was going to get more interesting and hey were going to live happily ever after, but no. I guess it just shows that all of America suffered and not just the Mid-West. It was a good book but could have been better. He should have made a sequel, like an aftermath of the Great Depression of some sort.
I think that Steinbeck ended the book abruptly because his purpose was to show the horrible things that were going during this time. The sudden ending makes the reader go back and think about the things that had happened. Maybe Steinbeck thought that a resolution wasn't necessary to show the anguish of the Joads, it was kind of irritating though...
I, personally, am happy it ended--mostly because that meant that I didn't have to keep dragging through it. Kudos, Steinbeck, for ending my misery.
well, considering that steinbeck is known as one of the greatest american writers, i doubt he was just being lazy, lol. if you think about it, most of the best literature, and even film, has open endings. it forces the reader to keep thinking about the issues raised and emphasizes that the problems are not extinct; poverty and depression still exist.
I think the end of the book was the best part.
It sounds to me like Steinbeck was done and had no other ideas to make the book more interesting otherwise the book would have been more depressing.
i think that steinbeck ended the book quickly so the reader could think about it more and come up with the real meaning of the book instead of being told what the meaning of the book is. and for those who can't figure it out at least they got a nice story with a good moral " if you see a turtle in the road hit it becuase it will serve no use later in life." yep that's the real moral of the story
