The Death of JC

In chapter 26, Jim Casey is killed because he led a rebellion (strike) against the CA police. Is his death symbolic of anything? Does it further the Bible metaphor? Is Tom's reaction symbolic?

Yes Jim Casy's death is symbolic. It does further the Bible metaphor. Tom's reaction is also symbolic.
This is because "every character represents Jesus in Steinback's novels."

Hey Bella...that is an interesting quote...where did you get it? It might make an interesting link to post!

It is a bible metaphor!!! i'm glad i'm not the only one who caught it. think about it, Casy's initials are JC (Jesus Christ), he gave himself up for tom's sins in the first camp they were at, and then after he "reappears", he is killed for what he believes.

also, somewher on page 251, he compares himself to jesus...

I have a real issue with this. NOT EVERYONE IS JESUS. I know you were kidding, Bella. But yeah, maybe Casey is but why do we have to compare everyone in every book, short story, and essay to Jesus. Also, just because someone is a good person and does something nice, maybe it means they symbolize Glinda or Buddha, I don't know. But it always has to be Jesus...

Because we have nothing better to do with our lives.

foolkiller, why do you hate jesus?

It's not that I hate Jesus, I just hate people who don't use proper capitalization.

excuse me...why do you hate Jesus?

Think upon this....

"You don't know what you're a-doin."
~Jim Casy

Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."
Luke 23:34

Jim Casey seemed to symbolize the overall importance of faith in everyone's lives whether it's Jesus, The Buddha, Muhammad or Glinda and Munchkins. It gave them something to anchor themselves and that's what matters.

fool killer, i don't really understand your problem. we aren't saying EVERYONE has to be jesus, just jim casy. did you miss all the references froggie princess made? and gazellia? steinbeck obviously intended for jim to be JESUS, not just any good person, or he wouldn't have gone to all the trouble of having him disappear and reappear and everything else. besides, the christ figure is a very common literary theme, so you're probably gonna need to try to just get used to it, lol.

I definately think that the death of JC is symbolic and furthers the Bible metaphor.
