Realization
Okay..... this may be a totally out-there comparison, but around page 174 in chapter 13, the Joads are talking to the Gasoline guy.... before it had described him as having " brown corduroy pants, suspenders, a polo shirt, and a cardboard sun helmet". Then on page 174 it says "And he say for the first time the fat man's cheap washed pants and his cheap polo shirt and his paper hat". While before the man had seemed well dressed, he was really shabby and poor. Will this happen with their final destination? California seems like it will be new and nice and a bright, shiny new future, but in reality will it be just be as shabby and poor as their previous home?

Thats a really interesting way to look at things. That is a very possible and highly plausible idea.
I agree. California seems like the land of opportunity, but I'm thinking that it will turn out worse than Oklahoma. Its kind of sad, Joad gets out of prison, comes to find his house deserted, and now California seems as if it too will not be all its cracked up to be.
whoa, nice catch there, ekl! i like it. i agree with the possible symbolism, and it would make sense for this to happen to a GASOLINE man b/c he's involved in the exodus to california.
It also could be a possibility that they don't even make it to california, and are disappointed in that sense. Steinbeck seems like he'd do something like that.
I have a feeling that something will unfortunate will happen in California because things just seem like they are not getting any better for Joad, and also we have over half of the book left, something will happen.
