Trouble With Buttons

ok, i'm sure there was some sort of significance attached to grampa's difficulty buttoning up his pants, shirt, and long underwear, but i have no idea what it was. and then the part about him scratching himself...didn't really feel like i needed to know that. can anyone help me out here?

I think that Steinbeck wanted to emphasize the fact that Granpa was an old, lecherous man.

Yeah, I think Steinbeck was just trying to emphasize what a character he is. He is very lively and far from decrepit. Steinbeck might be emphasizing his liveliness so that it is more of a shock when Grandpa dies. But yeah.... a little too much information on the old man....

I agree with the two above opinions. I believe that Steinbeck was just trying to give the reader and insight into the character of Grandpa without coming out and bluntly say,"Grandpa is...." Steinbeck was just using a more advanced style of characterization. The fact that he chose to share this particular information shows that Steinbeck might have been a dirty man himself.
