Persistent, or just plain dumb?

So the Joads have come a long way already. The grandparents are both deceased, the trip has been quite difficult, and now people keep telling the family of how there is little to no work in California, and the limited amount is not even worth it. In chapter 16, the man explains to Pa how in Cali, 20,000 people try to get 800 positions. Why then do the Joads continue with their journey? Are they persistent, confident that they can salvage their lives, or. . . not?

I was wondering the same thing, I mean the Joad family has been warned numerous times, yet they are still going. I mean I admire the fact that they want a better life, but I just hope that they are not hoping too much and not facing the reality that there is just not as many jobs in California that they were hoping for, and that life is not any better there.

My money's on just plain dumb. It's like telling a child "The stove is hot, don't touch it. When I was your age I touched it, and I got burnt" and the child touching the stove anyway. Yes, California looks pretty. But the Joads have been warned that nothing good will happen if they go to California by people who speak from personal experience. Does the phrase "glutton for punishment" come to mind?? Yes, it does. They need to wise up, like Noah did.

I don't think they are dumb. I think they are persistent, but only because they have no other choice. At home, they've got nothing, and there is no place for them to go but forward.

i agree with ekl, whatever is awaiting them in California has to be better than what they left behind...no matter what.

That's a good question. Cause I keep thinking "They're being really dumb about this" but the when you think about it, what other choice do they have?

I agree with EML. They have nothing to go back to so they have to be positive about their future in Cali and keep on going.
