Ma Changes Her Mind?
So earlier in the novel, Ma freaks out on Tom and Pa when they want to split up the family for a while. She wouldn't hear of it! But now, Noah left and she didn't show much emotion. Then when Connie left, she told Rose of Sharon to stop whining or she'll hit her. She seems to have lost all interest in keeping the family together. Has she given up?

I think maybe she is just trying to keep face and not fall apart.
She possibly isn't trying to fall apart and perhaps she has given up. Maybe she's been through so much and she doesn't want to "fight", so to speak any more.ller
I think before she really wanted the family to stay together so they could have the better life they wanted in California, but now I think everything is setting in that things are not going to be the way she wanted, and that she's just getting tired of trying so hard.
I think Ma was forced to allow the changes. In order to salvage what is left of her poor family. Everything seems to be falling apart, so in a way, maybe this separation will keep them together.
yeah, i think ma has gotten tired. steinbeck has mentioned more than once that she looks sick, maybe the illness and the family's hardships are catching up with her. also, i agree with hennifer that she may have given up on having a large, complete family, and instead has to concentrate what strength she has left on getting the most out of who's left, aka, not whining about the ppl the family has lost.
i think that she is trying not to lose it...i guess if she dwells on it too much, she will go crazy.
