A Depressing Pregnancy

So when times are rough, go to California.
If times are really rough, get pregnant, then go to California.
That's right! When you can barely afford to feed your own face, (Rose of Sharon) might as well have make another hungry child, as if there are not enough starving people during this time. Who knows, maybe good will come of the kid. Maybe it will be the next Rockefeller and bring the whole family out of poverty. I doubt it, but who knows?

Maybe it was just a coincidence. I mean, she just got married, and you know what people do when they get married. They didn't have any contraceptives back then. She probably couldn't control whether or not she was pregnant.

Hmmm....I never really thought about that until I heard you talking about it behind me XD lol.

Yeah it is ridiculous, but think about the fact that Rose of Sharon was a teenager and you know how we are; raging with hormones. They probably just wanted to be like every other family and have a kid, not thinking about the consequences or needs like most teens.

Wow Jen...good realization. I agree, Rose of Sharon does need to take into consideration that she already has a hard enough time feeding herself, and now she has to get food for not only herself, but also the baby.

People were depressed because of the effects of the depression (how ironic)and usually "doing the deed" would...well, make 'em happy. Getting pregnant is just one of those consequences (or blessings)...but hey, at least they were happy....for a time.

Rose of Sharon, which is a really weird name by the way, probably got pregnant before the Joads got kicked off their land. She really did not have a choice in the matter of going to California. Rose was probably exicited about going to Cali beacuse she thought that this would be a better place to raise her child.

And, but it would be even better without a kid, maybe, and they would have been free of dealing with kids in their struggling life.

I just hope the baby doesn't die. I am so tired of reading the author's accounts of dying children and starving babies.... This book is so depressing.

well, rose of sharon and connie are planning on not staying with the family, right? don't they plan on going off by themselves and getting good jobs or whatever. if their plan works out, they will be able to support a child...

I totally agree with you. If they can barely feed themselves how are they supposed to feed another person who will constantly want food?

I agree with Hennifer.
Mr. Capone, sometimes people need to think about the future instead of just what is going to get their mind off the depression.

i think that there is not going to be a sad ending to this pregnacy. i have a feeling that it is very unlikly that the child will die very shortly...it's pretty bad trying to bring a child into the world when you know that it woun't live....she should of thought of that earlier.
