The Cat and the Turtle
Is there any significance to the cat trying to eat the turtle, then giving up? It is some sort of foreshadowing that means that Joad (as the turtle) will face challenges, overcome them, and they will give up (allowing the family to live happily ever after)? Or am I just reading too much into this....

No, you are right. It is definitely significant. It must symbolize yet another trouble for the Joads (the cat) and how determined they are to get where they are going.
You are right. The cat and the turtle could foreshadow the problems that could arise for the Joads and hoe they might give up just like the turtle did on the turtle.
If the turtle represents the Joads, what would that cat represent. I mean, I know that it may be a challenge that the Joad's may face, but what else, there's got to be something else?
No, Alibama, I completely agree with you. I think it is pretty apparent that the turtle is a symbol for Joad, and anything that comes the turtle's way will eventually come Tom's way. it's only a matter of time...
Maybe the cat was just hungry. I know my cat tends to lick his chops everytime he sees my turtle moving around in his tank which is really sick. lol just kidding I doubt that was all. Probably some sort of parallel between the turtle and the Joads, and possibly even another character that has yet to be introduced...or the cat could be a parallel to the men that come in their cars to inspect the land....?
how do we even know that the turtle represents the joads? It could just be some random turtle. That was put in there for no apparent reason.
The more that i think about it, though, the more it seems quite impossible for the turtle to stand for anything else
Ali, you're right. The turtle and cat is significant. I think that there will be someone in Joad's life that will try to cause harm to him, but will then give up, which will greatly help Joad.
what's up with all the animal symbolism? oh well. It does seem as if they are foreshadowing a problem for Joad in the future that he is very tempted to give up to or give in to.
yeah, i doubt steinbeck would keep a random turtle around for no reason, so it's got so have some sort of symbolic significance, but i'm not sure exactly what.
it could be tom joad, or it could just represent everyone in the great depression and all the hardships they suffered due to banks and big businesses. steinbeck WAS calling the bank a monster, why not a cat?

I don't think that it's possible to read too much into Steinbeck. And yes, I think the cat trying to eat the turtle does have significance, though I'm not sure exactly what.
