Another One Bites the Dust

In chapter 20, Connie becomes the latest "I'm-leaving-the-party" victim. After a fight with Rose of Sharon, Connie just walks away (literally). So the questions are: Where did he go? Will he come back? Will he die? How will this affect RoS/the baby? Is there a reason that the author keeps removing characters? Does Connie symbolize any particular group of people?

That part seriously upset me! How could you just walk away from your wife and child??? I don't actually have any answers to your questions, but they are all good things to think about while you're reading.

Connie...what do you really expect from a guy named Connie, anyway? Personally, I think Roseasharon might be better of without him...but we'll see. How about her family's response to her loss?

Actually, they don't seem to care all that much. They just say "You're better off without him." The mom even tells her in chapter 22 that if she doesn't stop whining about it, she'll hit her. Talk about nonsupporting...

I agree with fool killer. Really good things to think about...This is just a thought but maybe Connie represents the people that expected something other than scraping a living picking fruit or berries for someone. Connie had great plans for his life ion California and maybe when he realized that they didn't seems likely to happen he just couldn't take it...???

Well, what do you expect from a woman who sleeps with dead grandma?

I think it's ridiculous that Roseasharon's mother isn't supporting her like a good mother should. Despite the conditions their in her mother shouldn't be so hard on her own daughter and comfort her.

I was very upset about this part of the story. I also thought Connie was a great guy, always helping Rose of Sharon off the car and having their own little secrets...but then he just gets up and leaves!! What a jerk!! And especially in such a hard time as this, you know with a baby on the way, and the fact that they're in the Dust Bowl!!

It leads to an interesting quetion, though. Why is Ma Joad so hard on Roseasharon...and even Ruthie? What happens to the families without a mother?
