Me too, I figured that it was some type of acronym...or just some random letters to to represent a type of mumbling. But that's cool.

That's interesting... Where was it used?? I don't remember....
I think Steinbeck was just humanizing the dialogue a little bit. Maybe it's kind of like the Dust Bowl Era's version of text message abbreviations...Laugh Out Loud (LOL). Slang has always been around.
