The Grapes

So at the end of chapter 25, the last sentence is:

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage" (477).

What do you think this means? Is some kind of mass revolt about to break out? What is meant by "the grapes of wrath"? Whose wrath is it? What could "the vintage" be??

wow...pretty powerful sentence. I think something is about to happen. People have been being treated as less than human for too long, and something is bound to break out soon.

The vintage is the time of gathering grapes, or of winemaking. (Thank you dictionary.com)

This relates to Revelations 14:19
"The angel swung his sickle on the earth , gathered the grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God's wrath".

That's all I got.

i still don't really understand it...i mean i agree with ekl, but bella, that pretty much went over my head.

It means ekl is right. Change is coming.
The grapes are about to be made into wine.

Yea, the sentence sounds like there has been a lot going on (the "filling and growing heavy") and they have to do something about it ("the vintage").

yeah, i agree with ekl. that is actually a really cool sentence/ analogy. wrath is growing in the ppl as their anger builds. soon the time for "vintage" is coming. wine making is a very messy process that involves destruction and messiness, just like a violent riot or rebellion. but eventually vintage leads to wine, something ppl enjoy and get drunk on, like freedom and/or prosperity.

So do you guys think that it could have something to do with the people's souls maturing, in a way? Or could it be a Christian missionary statement, saying that souls are getting "ready for the harvest"? Or am I reading too much into it?

That is a pretty interesting passage. It is quite thought provoking. The grapes of wrath are inside the people? It does sound just like the people are ready to spring. The grapes are ready...and so are they.

I think it means that the, like ekl said, that the people have been treated so terribly for so long, that they are just about to break and riot soon.

Yeah I agree that this means that someting really important is about to happen. The people hungry and that means they are powerful and are going to have to take the land back for themselves.
