Dust Bowl Women

So does anyone have any theories as to what may be wrong with Mrs. Joad? Before they left the house the Mr. Casy alluded to the fact that she looked sick, and then when she walks into the bedroom Steinbeck takes great care to describe the change in Mrs. Joad's body. Do you think she is really sick or just tired?

I didn't even realize it, but now that you mention that, he did take great care. Then when Grandma is really sick, and the jehovite woman comes in, Ma is cold and refuses her prayer. She is in denial that Grandma is dying. Maybe Mrs. Joad is really sick, too.

Well--think what she has been through..and there is a lot of book left. He mother-in-law is very ill--possibly dying, her family may break apart, she has lost her domain--the kitchen, the hearth--is she becoming another lost soul?

I think that either she will die or become sick. He keeps talking about her as if she is an invalid. she isn't healthy, whatever the reason, be it sickness or exhaustion or some combination thereof.

one word... depression....i'm sure that during the depression many people had depression....and that is what caused many women to look sick is becuased they were depressed. depressed becuase they could help their children from starving to death. speaking of starving to death that is probably another reason that they looked so sick is that they weren't getting the proper nutrition they needed

I think that Ma is going to become pretty ill because she has been through so much and has to worry about so much. A human body can not take all that stress and harsh conditions and still function properly. I think that Steinbeck is using this to show that even the Joads are making a great trip across the country and surviving they are still only human. This probably also represents that many people did get sick during the era and die because of the conditions and stress.
